Music and photography have been my two passions for as long as I can remember – the one influencing and often shaping the other. I live on the edge of the Scottish Highlands where the landscapes can be majestic, bleak and beautiful - landscapes which populate my compositions with a sense of poignancy, curiosity, loss and discovery.
I remember hearing Roger Miller’s classic song King of the Road for the first time when I was 7 and being fascinated by the syncopated bass line. Inevitably, a Futurama bass guitar, larger than myself, quickly became my best friend. From that moment to this, music has accompanied me every step of the way, providing inspiration and a safe haven from life’s twists and turns.
I have played guitars and keyboards in Ceilidh bands, blues bands, and studied Jazz in Venezuela with celebrated jazz pianist Gerry Weil. More recently I had my own jazz fusion band Helias, playing original compositions. Currently I write and record, stripping back to mainly acoustic instruments in search of authenticity and simplicity.
My ever present childhood influences have come from church hymns, traditional Scottish reels, my parents’ recordings of My Fair Lady and other musicals. Add to that Stevie Wonder, Chopin, Weather Report, Keith Jarrett, Olafur Arnalds, Salsa musicians from my 10 years in Venezuela and a host of other artists, contemporary, jazz and classical – there is much to strip back!
